JACQUES BERTHIEU (1838-1896)  was born in France, on 27 November 1838, in Montlogis (Cantal, France). At the age of 15, he entered the minor seminary in Pleaux. In October 1859, he moved to the major seminary in Saint-Flour, where he was ordained priest on 21 May 1863. For the next nine years, he served as pastor in the parish of Roannes-Saint-Mary. Here, his religious and missionary vocation matured. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1873.

On 26 September 1875, he embarked at Marseilles for the Madagascar mission. Subsequently, in a number of places, he pledged himself to help the suffering people, to teach catechism, and to administer the sacraments. Finally, in 1891, he arrived in Andrainarivo.

His priestly love was such that whoever had dealings with him could not but be deeply moved: his detachment from all possessions and the simplicity of his life; his zeal and readiness to hasten to the dying and those in need; but above all, people were amazed at the vital faith with which he spoke about eternal life. He stayed with his Madagascans, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

In June 1896, rebels overran the village and captured Father Berthieu. Near Ambiatibe, their leader ordered six armed men to go to him. When the priest saw them, he knelt down and made the sign of the cross. One of the leaders said: "Give up your stupid religion. Do not deceive the people. We will take you into our group, and make you our chief and adviser." He answered: "My son, I cannot possibly agree with this. I would rather die."

Two men then fired their rifles at him, but missed their mark. Another rifle shot hit the priest in the back, but it did not kill him. Then, their captain came up and discharged his rifle at Father Berthieu's head. This was the shot that killed him. It happened on 8 June 1896.

PEDRO CALUNGSOD (1655-1672)  was a teenage native of the Visayas region of the Philippines. He was one of the boy catechists who went with some Spanish Jesuit missionaries to the Mariana Island in 1668 to evangelize the Chamorros.

Many accepted the Faith. But very soon, a Chinese healer, named Choco, envious at the missionaries, started to spread the rumour that the baptismal water of the missionaries was poisonous. The evil campaign of Choco was readily supported by some superstitious and immoral natives — the Macanjas and the Urritaos — who began to persecute the missionaries.

On 2 April 1672, Pedro — by then already about seventeen years old — and the superior of the Mission, named Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores, came to the village of Tomhom, in the Island of Guam to baptize a baby. But the child's father, named Matapang, angrily refused to have his baby baptized.

Determined to kill the missionaries, Matapang went to enlist in his cause another villager, named Hirao. Matapang violently hurled spears first at Pedro. The lad skirted the darting spears with remarkable dexterity. Pedro had all the chances to escape because he was very agile, but he did not want to leave Padre Diego alone. He would have defeated his fierce aggressors if only he had some weapon because he was a valiant boy; but Padre Diego never allowed his companions to carry arms. Finally, Pedro was hit by a spear at the chest and Hirao finished him off with a blow of a cutlass on the head. After that, they also killed Padre Diego.

The assasins threw the bodies of Pedro and Padre Diego into the ocean. Those remains of the martyrs were never to be found again.

Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores was beatified on 6 October 1985 while Pedro Calungsod was beatified on 5 March 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIAMARTA (1841-1913)  was born in Brescia (Italy) on 26 November 1841. His father was a barber. His mother, a very pious woman, had a decisive influence on his education, but died when he was only nine years old. His maternal grandfather kept him from the streets, steering John Baptist towards the oratory of St. Thomas. While an apprentice mattress maker, he met Don Pancrazio Pezzana, pastor of Vallio, who inclined the young Piamarta to priesthood. Ordained on 23 December 1865, in the first twenty years he carried out intense pastoral work in the parishes of Brescia, remembered by all as a priest «zealous, excellent, flawless in everything».

Brescia was in the process of industrialization, and John Baptist Piamarta identified himself with the difficulties and hopes of disadvantaged youth. With Mons. Pietro Capretti, «jewel of the Brescian clergy» and part of the Catholic movement, on 3 December 1886, he set up the Institute Artigianielli for the vocational, human and Christian education of the poorest youths. Although very fruitful, the initiative brought Piamarta many «thorns and pains», which he met with an unshaken trust in Providence. In 1895, with the help of Father Giovanni Bonsignori, he began the Agricultural Colony of Remedello, a beacon for agricultural improvement and training Christian engineers.

He founded the male Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1900 and in 1911, along with Mother Elisa Baldo, the Congregation of the Humble Servants of the Lord.

By establishing the printing and publishing house, Queriniana, he contributed to the emergence of a strong diocesan Catholic press, making Brescia a European centre in this field.

«All things to all men»: Father Piamarta's was a life of endless dedication, made possible by deep prayer, nurtured each day from dawn. He fell asleep in the Lord on 25 April 1913.

CARMEN SALLÉS Y BARANGUERAS  foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, was born on 9 April 1848, in Vic, Barcelona (Spain). Her parents gave her a solid Christian education and taught her how to pray and follow God's Will, as well as a deep love for the Virgin Mary.

Willing to find an answer to the restlessness she felt, she dedicated long hours to prayer and asked the advice of learned and spiritual persons before taking a decision. Carmen suffered a lot before being able to carry out her vocational project.

On 1869, Carmen entered the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. There she discovered her special call to educate the youth through a preventive method of education, inspired by the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. While still a novice, she left that Congregation. In 1870, she joined the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation where she carried out the mission of education.

Always seeking to fulfill God's Will, in 1892 she abandoned the Dominican Congregation with three Sisters: Candelaria Boleda, Remedios Pujol and Emilia Horta. On 15 October 1892, Carmen and her three compagnions went to Burgos. The Archbishop, Most Rev. Manuel Gomez Salazar, was their great benefactor. On 7 December 1892, he granted Diocesan approval to the new born Congregation and authorized the opening of the first school. Mother Carmen founded 13 other «Houses of Mary Immaculate», as she used to call her communities and schools. She also planned to go to Italy and Brazil.

She loved passionately Jesus Christ and Mary Immaculate; and she let herself be molded by them. Her life was fruitful because it was a self-giving life. «While there are children and youth to be educated, the difficulties cannot stop us» she used to say.

She died in Madrid on 25 July 1911 and was beatified on 14 March 2005. Today, the Congregation, present in 16 countries, continues carrying out M. Carmen's message: «Forward, always forward, God will provide»

BARBARA COPE (1838-1918)  was born in Heppenheim (Germany) on 23 January 1838 but settled with her family in Utica (New York, USA). Nurtured in faith, she developed the gifts of compassion and responsiveness to those in need as well as respect for others and self-sacrifice.

In 1862, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse (now the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities) and took the name Marianne. Apart from engaging in teaching, she founded and administered two hospitals in Utica and Syracuse. In 1877, she was elected superior general. In that position, she bravely heeded the plea of the king of the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), already turned down by several congregations, to send sisters who would care for his suffering people.

Initially, Mo. Marianne only intended to help the six volunteer sisters to settle down in the mission. Deeply touched by the plight of those with Hansen's Disease (then known as leprosy), she chose instead to remain with them. She first ministered to the residents of «Leper Hospital» in Honolulu for five years and then at the isolated Kalaupapa Peninsula for thirty years. In her freely chosen exile, Mo. Marianne provided a safe, loving home for the social outcasts. She collaborated in the work of St. Damian De Veuster and continued his ministry after he died in 1889.

With deep maternal concern, Mo. Marianne promised her sisters that none of them would contract leprosy from their patients — and none have this day.

Mo. Marianne died in Kalaupapa on 9 August 1918 and buried among the people she so loved. In 2004, her remains were moved to the Motherhouse chapel in Syracuse. The «Mother of Outcasts» was beatified on 14 May 2005.

CATHERINE TEKAKWITHA (1656-1680)  was born in 1656 in that part of the American Continent which is today the State of New York. Her parents were native Indians. Her father, an Iroquois, was pagan; her mother, an Algonquin, was a devout Christian. When she was four years old, Catherine lost her parents and her only brother to an epidemci of smallpox. She too contracted the disease and, although she survived, her face was left severly pockmarked.

Finding a home in the family of her uncle, a chief of the tribe of Agniers, more commonly know as the Mohawks, she was brought up in that tribe. While living among the Mohawks, she received instruction in the Faith and was baptized in 1676 by Father Jacques de Lamberville, one of the devoted Jesuit missionaries committed to the evangelization of the Indians. After becoming a Christian, Catherine soon became a model of youthful piety.

Unfortunately, she was target of harassment and persecution at home because of her faith and her determination to live in virginity. On the advice of the missionaries, who thought she should move to friendlier surroundings, she came to live among the fervent Christian Indians of the settlement known as the Mission of St. Francis Xavier, near present-day Montreal. Here she made great progress in short time along the road of holiness. And here she died on 17 Abril 1680, widely known and esteemed by all as a saint. Her last words: «Jesus, I love you».

This young Iroquois woman, whose life was sustained by her Christian faith and by an ardent love of Jesus present in the Eucharist, found in Jesus Christ the strength to withstand the hostile pressure of the non-Christian culture in which she live and to keep with heroic fidelity the vow of virginity which she pronounced on 25 March 1679.

Mi siervo justificará a muchos,
porque cargó con los crímenes de ellos.

Verbum Domi- ni. R. De- o gra- ti- as.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First reading

If he offers his life in atonement,
he shall see his heirs,
he shall have a long life.

A reading from the prophet Isaiah

The Lord has been pleased to crush his
servant with suffering. If he offers his
life in atonement, he shall see his heirs,
he shall have a long life and through him
what the Lord wishes will be done.

His soul's anguish over he shall see the
light and be content. By his sufferings
shall my servant justify many, taking
their faults on himself.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

LITURGIA DELLA PAROLA

Prima lettura

Quando offrirà se stesso
in sacrificio di riparazione,
vedrà una discendenzia.

Dal libro del profeta Isaia

Al Signore è piaciuto prostrarlo con
dolori.

Rendiamo grazie a Dio.
